Whimsy Way Play Cafe opened in June, and I had the chance to go check it out! I brought my 3-year-old to the indoor play space, and she had a blast playing in the ball pit, going down the slides, and exploring the playroom. The owner, Brittany, was wonderful to chat with. This is her second play cafe, and it’s clear that she understands what types of activities engage kids and how to create an enjoyable space for adults.

Features of Whimsy Way Play Cafe
Whimsy Way Play Cafe is divided into three areas. When you first arrive, you’ll walk into the cafe area. This bright space has tables and chairs (as well as WiFi) where you can eat or get some work done while your kiddos play. To get into the play space, you’ll check in at the cafe counter. After signing a waiver, one of the staff members will go over the rules (which include that balls must stay in the ball pit and that no shoes are allowed in the play space). Brittany values cleanliness! Socks are required for kids and adults, so be sure to bring them.

We spent most of our time in the main playroom. This appealing orange, yellow, and white space features a large ball pit, triple-slide, and two-level climbing structure. It also has a 4-sided rock climbing wall (note that this is more appropriate for slightly older kids, since they have to be able to hoist themselves up!). Additionally, there are cushioned stepping stones that can be moved around. The floor of the entire space is covered with foam mats, which is great for little ones. In the corner is a large speaker playing a dance-worthy kid-friendly playlist.

Near the shoe cubbies, Brittany has plans to add a chalk board and a mural painted by a local artist. She will also be incorporating sensory boards for the littlest friends.

Attached to the main play space is another room for pretend play. With several tables and folding chairs, this is where you could host a birthday party. There are different types of toys in this room, including shelves of pretend fruits and vegetables, a small kitchen, some dress-up options, and a doctor’s clinic.

Food
Whimsy Way features a cafe area to enjoy food and drinks. The cafe offers fresh bites (including bagels, pastries, and cinnamon rolls), as well as espresso drinks, coffee, tea, and freshly-made lemonades. There are gluten-free menu options, too! Brittany shared that her goal is to support local bakeries and to change the menu based on what fresh ingredients are available. Currently, you are able to bring outside food in, although that may change.

Bathrooms
There are two private restrooms; one is in the cafe area, and the other is in the play space. The artwork in both restrooms incorporates positive affirmations and welcoming messages. While there wasn’t a baby changing table available during my visit, Brittany assured me that one has been ordered and will be installed soon!

Best Times To Go
While this space recently opened, Brittany believes that weekends will be the most crowded time, and that weekday mornings will likely be the least crowded.
Accessibility
Whimsy Way is located on street level. Depending on the number of people visiting, the volume varies; the cafe area was a great spot for us to take a break when we needed a snack and a drink. Brittany has plans to have sensory-friendly events; this information will be posted on Instagram.

My daughter and I really enjoyed our time playing at Whimsy Way! It incorporates many things that I find important when visiting indoor play spaces – it is clean, has age-appropriate activities, a friendly staff, and enough to do to keep my daughter entertained for a long time. Worth noting is that this space is located right across the street from the BNSF Berwyn Metra train stop, so you could incorporate a visit here with a train adventure!
