Activity Prep

To prep this digraph activity, simply print the digraph cards (below) on card stock to give them extra durability, and cut along the dotted lines to separate them. You may also want to laminate them so they’re even sturdier!

Then, flip the cards face down on the table and mark the correct clipping spot with a small dot on the back of each one. This small extra step will help students to self-correct later.

Place the clip cards in the center of the table along with a small basket of clothespins.

Clipping the Cards

This digraph activity is helpful for practicing common digraphs such as SH and CH. The clip cards include a mix of beginning and ending digraphs.

Remind students to look at the picture, sound out the word slowly, and then place the clothespin on the digraph that matches the sound they hear.

When the first student picks up the chalk card, she says, “Ch-alk. Ch. That’s the CH sound!” Then, she reaches into the basket, grabs a clothespin, and clips it to CH on the card.

One card after the next, students finish clipping all of the digraphs.

Then, they flip over the cards to check that their clothespins are in the right spot. Make a mistake? Look to see where it was supposed to go, read the correct digraph on the front to reinforce their learning, and move the clothespin into place.
