The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of our family’s favorite children’s stories. We’ve read it so many times that Big Brother (age 5.5) can recite the words without even cracking open the book. So I was excited to pull together a fun follow up activity for my kids: Very Hungry Caterpillar puzzles.
These simple, colorful puzzles are a motivating way to practice matching, build fine motor skills and even sound out words.

Getting Ready
Prepping the Very Hungry Caterpillar puzzles (HERE) was easy breezy. I printed the pages on cardstock to make them extra sturdy, cut along the gray lines to separate the pieces and slid each puzzle into a separate Ziploc so they’d be ready to grab and build.

Middle Brother (age 3.5) had been watching me work and was eager to jump in and start building his first puzzle.
He made quick work of the project and eagerly started piecing together a harder set.
Meanwhile, Big Brother (age 5.5) wandered in from the sandbox and wanted to join in the fun. He’s all about challenges these days, so he confidently grabbed the big daddy of them all: caterpillar. Bit by bit, he stretched out the word and (with a little help on the silent E and double L) placed all eleven pieces in their just -right spot.
(He worked on strawberry and butterfly. The boy has no fear!)
