We love learning games that let us roll dice and we love to color. This roll and color shapes game is the best of both worlds!
The motivating 2D shape game is perfect for preschoolers and early kindergarteners who need to build confidence in recognizing and naming their shapes. It is sure to be a hit with your kids, too! While you’re practicing your shapes, check out our Pattern Block Mats in our shop!
Getting Ready
This game is fairly simple to prepare, as the die takes just a few minutes to make!
First, I printed the recording sheet (below) and made enough copies for each of my students to play the game.
Then, I printed the die and laminated it so that it wouldn’t tear or get too dented.
Finally, I folded the die on the dotted lines and taped on the edges to create a cube. I just used basic clear tape that I had on hand, and the die held up fairly well. Plus, it was easy to repair when needed!
Roll and Color Shapes
This game is great to play solo, in partners, or in a small group. Since I wanted to focus on naming and matching shapes with a few students, I played in a small group where we took turns rolling, naming, and then all coloring the shape.
If you print multiple copies of the die, it would be great for independent work or a math center!
We grabbed the die and gave it a quick roll. It landed on a rectangle, so we all said the name together – “rectangle” and then hunted for it on our paper, coloring it when we found it.
Time to roll again! This time we rolled a hexagon, so we repeated its name, then found and colored it as well.
This game is perfect for beginners to shapes, as the shapes are all the same orientation and not rotated in any way. The focus here is matching and naming, then as kids get familiar with shapes, we move onto identifying them no matter which way they are turned.
This game was a hit and highly requested! The kids loved rolling and coloring, and I loved that they were getting those shapes down!
